99% Machine-Cleaned Purity

The quality of black seed oil starts with the quality and purity of the black cumin seeds. After harvesting, seeds can contain unwanted materials such as dried flower petals, stems, dust, and other plant debris.

ZemZem Trade maintains a 99% purity standard for the Ethiopian black cumin seeds used in our black seed oil production. Our seeds undergo machine cleaning to remove unwanted particles before pressing.

This commitment to purity is also documented in our product inspection certificates, providing buyers with greater confidence in the quality and consistency of our Ethiopian black seed oil.

Fresh Harvest for Better Quality

The freshness of Nigella sativa seeds can affect black seed oil quality. We prioritize fresh, new-crop seeds and avoid using seeds that have been stored for more than 12 months.

ZemZem Trade stocks new-crop seeds at harvest and sources seeds no older than 12 months when out of season.

Phytosanitary & Certificates of Origin

Single Cold-Press Extraction

Ethiopian black cumin seeds contain approximately 30–32% oil. At ZemZem Trade, we use a single cold-press extraction at 49°C, yielding around 25% oil.

While pressing the seeds twice can increase oil yield, it can also expose the seeds to higher heat and potentially affect the oil’s quality. For this reason, we press our Ethiopian black cumin seeds only once to preserve the quality of the final black seed oil.

I’d leave out the specific benzopyrene figures unless you have a reliable, verifiable source for those claims. It makes the copy shorter and avoids making a regulatory/health claim that could be difficult to substantiate.

Pressing Temperature at 49°C.

For the oil to be designated as cold pressed, the temperature may not exceed 49 ℃ (120 ℉). Oils extracted this way retain their genuine flavour, aroma, and nutrients. By setting the temperature low during process, it prevents detrimental effects on the seed’s ingredients.

The cold-press extraction does not involve heat treatment nor chemical inputs. These oils have better nutritive properties than refined oils. Many of the temperature sensitive phenolic compounds are not lost and there are no oxidation reactions, which is referred to as “higher quality oil.

ZemZem Trade presses at 49 ℃ at an RPM of 23 – 33 cold rotation speed. Extracting 20-25% oil out of the 32% available in the seeds.

Cold press extraction as compared with soxhlet method extraction, is more economical and safe since it does not include use of solvents and heat treatment.

Extraction methods aside, other parameters that also affect the end product oil includes the origin of the seeds, harvest time, and agro-technical precautions (as explained in our black seed webpage).

Filtered or non-filtered oil.

Filtering involves putting the oil through thick layers of cloth to trap the tiny sediment particles of black seeds that may be in the oil. That’s the idea.

We don’t filter our black seed oil. We remove those sediment particles with the help of Mother Nature, namely gravity.

The oil is poured into large storage tanks housed inside a temperature-controlled room. (The exception is when customers prefer immediate bottled oil with the sediments included.) Inside the tank, the oil is allowed to settle for three days so Mother Nature can “suck” any remaining sediment particles to the bottom. This process is called “racking.”

During racking we move the oil from tank to our standard 10litre bottles made of safe quality food-grade plastic. The racking process typically is completed every three days, allowing us to ship a minimum of 5 new oil shipments every month.

The most noticeable difference between an unfiltered and a filtered black seed oil is appearance. The unfiltered oil appears black and cloudy, owing to residual sediment particles that weren’t removed through gravity in the settlement tank. Once the oil has been fully racked, however, the lower concentration of remaining sediment particles no longer has an adverse effect on the oil’s lifespan or quality.

MADE UNDER STRICT GMP RULES

The three factors making ZemZem black seed oil unique and special:

  1. The use of carefully sourced Nigella Sativa seeds from Ethiopia’s Bale & Gonder farms. Pressing oil only after machine cleaning the seeds to 99.6% purity.
  1. Cold press method when pressing oil, not more than 49 degree C (international standard). Giving you pure black seed oil free from burn effects. The temperature is automatically controlled with a built in thermostat.
  1. Never filtering the oil using any machine to keep the important minerals of the oil intact. But filtering using natural gravity, allowing our 40 litre barrels to remain locked away from direct light 2 to 3 days. Then removing the top pure oil into our standard 10 litre bottles.

This website is for people looking for the benefits of Ethiopia’s natural products, produced under strict quality and sanitation standards.

ZemZem Oils is truly unique, having managed to achieve all-round excellence in the four pillars of our industry:

Nigella Sativa : Properties Benefits Uses

The black seeds are gathered from the Nigella Sativa flower fetus. With the plants reaching a height about knee-deep, has a straight branchy stem, dissected leaves, & white – bluish flowers. Also known as black caraway, black cumin, nigella, and kalonji.

Black cumin is known for centuries. People have gone so far as to say Egyptian queen Cleopatra’s beauty is because she uses black cumin, & the elite rulers throughout the Middle East used kalonji oil to maintain good health and longevity.

Egyptian historical literature indicates the many uses for black seed oil: natural cosmetics, antidotes for snake bites, digestion improvement, getting rid of intestinal parasites, etc. The oil was found in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs in the form of a container, making it a significant plant even in ancient times. Oil from the Egyptian seeds was eventually named “Royal”, & as you can see Egypt along with Ethiopia are located in the tropical regions of Africa thus also labeling Ethiopian black cumin as among the “Premium” quality.

The use of this flower’s seed/oil for traditional remedy in Asia, the Mediterranean, Africa and the Middle East is about 3000 years old (according to modern archaeological findings). With many historical facts of priming these seeds by ancient scientists and healers. As an example, the Greek physician Hippocrates knew about the Nigella Sativa and applied it to treat his patients. His compatriot Dioscorides used the seeds for treating headaches and toothaches.

Top reason for Nigella Sativa popularity as a universal natural remedy is the seed’s unique chemical composition. Each seed contains vast quantities of vitamins, natural resources, and fatty acids. The main active component of the oil is a crystalline nigelon, a substance that is not fully understood by chemists, but has been thoroughly investigated by physicians.

Nutrition Content of Nigella Sativa Seeds

The nutrition of seeds from different regions is different, as it depends on the soil, water, and climatic conditions of the region. Therefore, the end-result of using the seed oil can be different. This explains why people buying products without knowing what seeds were used for obtaining the oil do not feel the effect. The first question that a buyer of such rare product should ask: “What seeds were used for the oil extraction?”. But this is not the only criteria for quality of the product, so for more information about it, check out the page of our website on Quality.

Black Seeds and extracted black seed oil contain more than 100 active ingredients and about 50 catalysts of natural cell biosynthesis, and this is not all…

“There are still many components that have not been identified yet and research is currently on-going around the world with respect to this plant” (Zahoor et al., 2004)

Cumin seeds include very important Phytochemical components that make this product very powerful and useful (Dr. Axe, the creator of the famous American site of alternative medicine):

  • Thymoquinone (TQ)
  • Thymohydroquinone (THQ)
  • Thymol

Some details about the above Phytochemical components:

THYMOQUINONE – a substance contained in 30-40% essential oils of Nigella Sativa seeds. An emerging drug with anti-cancer molecules First obtained in 1960 by Professor El-Dakhakhny.

THYMOHYDROQUINONE – another kind of Thymoquinone. The most potent natural acetylcholinesterase inhibitors on the planet. Thymohydroquinone has the main role in halting enzyme activity, allowing the brain to keep a big amount of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine longer.

THYMOL – an active famous ingredient that has useful medicinal properties. Thymol is widely used in the pharmaceutical industry. There is even a medical drug called “Thymol” – antihelminthic drug, antiseptic, bactericidal, antipruritic, and anthelmintic. And others, such as tooth elixirs and disinfectants.

To consider the chemical composition of seeds of black cumin, seeds from different countries have been tested and investigated in various laboratories around the world since the early 1990’s. With many different research results because as mentioned before the nutritional content depends on the place of origin, the soil, water, and climate of that particular region.

“The pure seeds of Nigella sativa showed richness and diversity in its biological structure.  These seeds contain carbohydrates, proteins, amino acids, volatile, and fixed oils” (Rajsekhar and Kuldeep, 2011)

Furthermore, “Biological examination of Nigella Sativa contents has revealed that it contains carotene, which is converted into Vitamin A by the liver” (Nergiz and Otles, 1993).

Another crucial component in natural Nigella is the presence of Fiber. With a study made by The Enzymatic-Gravimetric Assay (1996) verifying the presence of the following components:

  • Total Dietary Fiber (TDF)
  • Soluble Dietary Fiber (SDF)
  • Insoluble Dietary Fiber (IDF)

Fiber contents of samples from different varieties of Nigella Sativa seeds:
